Chapter 10 - Storm

Storm couldn’t remember a more tumultuous few days in her long, long lifespan. Seconds after Fern had dropped the biggest news of her life on her, they’d heard the beating of dragon wings, and Autumn had joined them in the Amphitheater, shifting into her own human shape when she saw that both Fern and Storm were standing on two legs. The matriarch wasn’t as graceful as Mike, Storm realized with some amusement as the woman strode up to them. A little more practiced than Storm was, certainly… but compared to the easy way Mike moved, she was stilted and clumsy as a child.

“Storm,” Autumn said, inclining her head, though she hadn’t managed to keep the surprise from her face. “It’s good to see you once more, sister. What brings you back?”

Autumn didn’t recognize the expression of shock on her face, Storm realized dully as she turned away from Fern, her heart still pounding in her chest at the weight of what had been revealed to her. Facial expressions weren’t their strong suit, were they? Mike would have known… Mike would have looked curiously into her eyes, then asked some question that made it clear that he’d all but read her mind. Was that why humans didn’t need telepathy, she wondered? Did they simply read what they needed from each other’s faces?

But Autumn was waiting for her response, and she cleared her throat hard, straightened her back, made her apology for her cowardice. The matriarch was pleased… and clearly a little distracted by the pressing issue of the egg. The day before, several dragons had been dispatched to collect it from the swamp where it had been incubating… and consternation had spread quickly through the clan when it turned out the egg wasn’t there.

“Did they give us the wrong directions?” Storm said blankly, her gaze shifting from Autumn to Fern. “Is the egg in a different place?”

“We are searching now,” Autumn said heavily. “All of us, the young ones included.”

Storm’s eyes widened. Involving children in the search… that was unheard of. “I’m so sorry,” she said softly, feeling a strange weight in her chest. “I should have been here. I’ll help, now.”

Autumn gave her a grateful smile—and with that, the conversation seemed to be over. The three of them shifted and took wing, Autumn giving her directions for where to find the dragons who were leading the search party. Her focus shifted so thoroughly to the search that it was hours before she remembered the news that Fern had given her, the shock that had rung through her… and she took a breath, flaring her wings a little as she landed in an as-yet unsearched section of the Everglades. She scrutinized the area, looking for any signs that might suggest the egg, tuning into her magic to see if it would resonate the way it usually did when another shifter was close by… but as far as she could tell, there was nothing here. She searched anyway, methodical, careful… but her mind strayed again and again to what Fern had told her.
